Kampala's pumping nightlife: How Sweet Beats Records is conquering the city

Kampala's pumping nightlife: How Sweet Beats Records is conquering the city

Kampala's nightlife is booming! Jam sessions at National Theatre, reggae at BBQ, great live music at Zone7, or just pool and beers at Bubbles in Kolole. Everyday of the week, there is something for everybody in Kampala!

This vibrant nightlife is boosted by a rapid growing music scene. The Urban Detective interviews the team of Sweet Beats Records: Reggae artist Tykonn Paul, his manager Matovu Solomun and producer Richie Reids Pro. What does Kampala’s music scene look like? How do these new creatives conquer Kampala’s nightlife?

"It's the music that made this family. Music is the Dad of this family". (Matovu Solomun)

KAMPALA'S GROWING MUSIC INDUSTRY

The music industry is growing so fast. Seven years ago, you could become a superstar with just a sound: beats and words. Nowadays, it has become a highly competitive business, Solomun explains.

"There is so much talent, so many productions and companies coming up. So much money is being invested: it has definitely become a huge and competitive business." (Matovu Solomun)

Still, for upcoming artists in this growing industry it is hard to make ends meet. The team makes makes money by selling out shows, producing tracks for various artists and branding deals with companies.

Tykonn Paul has been conquering Kampala's music scene with new reggae and dancehall tunes. His newest hit, KIMBALULA, has just been released.

CONQUERING THE WORLD

"Music is healing, music is life. Music is happiness and food for the soul." (Tykonn Paul)

Tykonn explains they want to go all over the world to give the people what they have. To make people happy and inspire them. He is already been performing in Sweden and will probably be touring Europe in a few months.

However, Kampala still plays a major role in his music. Not only for conquering its nightlife, but also as a huge source of inspiration. In 2015 he even dedicated a full song to his city.

Sweet Beats Records is all about creating art for inspiration. Their motivation and inspiration for the music comes from inspiring others.

As nightlife is booming in this fast growing city, I hope these guys stay on top of the music industry. Their songs and personalities are unique and sincere!

Special thanks to Thimaud Lallemand de Driesen, for the hook-up and the edit!
