Urban Heroes #4: How Team Kalahari is bringing down walls in California, Nairobi.
"Many people here lack opportunities, but more importantly; most of them believe they cannot do anything. Our role in the community is to make them realize that this is not true and show them there are other ways. That they can actually do something; that they can join the ‘other world’: cross the wall."
This story is dedicated to my true Nairobian friend Max Weber, who, in everyday life, goes by the name of Max Kalahari. This name is derived from the group he is part of: Team Kalahari. In their neighbourhood - California, Nairobi - this group of youngsters is organizing all kinds of activities on the central square: 'Desert Grounds'. For A City Made By People, I visit Max and his friends - also known as youth group 'Berlin' - during one of their activities: a peace football tournament.
Again, I become aware of the fact that cities aren't just build by people, cities become interesting and inspiring places through millions of human interactions every day. Through the social networks of different groups of people and the creativity from the combined characteristics of all urbanites.
Cities are made by people. Especially people like Max, and the rest of Team Kalahari.
